A still meditation that led to much more.

"The Lord washes away all sin and all pain.  Every day is a new day with the Lord. He can make your soul white as snow."

I was sitting in my room meditating tonight and decided to add light to my meditation time.  I didn't try to make everything without form and an empty space.  I filled that space with the light.  I sought the light, and the light reached out.  The light didn't show me a place, it didn't show my my future.  All that I suddenly saw was the hundreds of memories that flooded through my mind of past events that I am not proud of.  After I had seen those moments, the light pushed a wave as big as the sky through my vision. The light was there but the stars were shining.  Everything that I had stressed about or felt guilty about disappeared. The purpose of my meditation was to discover what I was missing in life and what to do next.  Instead, I focused on a light and it broke the chains of my past that kept me in fear and kept me away from success.

I know this all sounds crazy, but the statement I made at the beginning of this blog is not my own.  It is a promise that I heard, a statement of truth that overcame me as I sat on the edge of my bed, relaxing for the first time in months.  I no longer let the noise of life and work fill my mind. I decided to just be.  The best part, I knew that wave.  I had been to that place before.  I had felt that peace on a starry night on a deserted beach outside of Wailuku.  The heaven's showed me peace then, and the Lord has just reminded me of my worth, my value, my forgiveness.
I hope this Volunteering Traveler has many more adventures.  I know they will be based in spreading the love of God with the earth.

I am excited for the next step! Keep following me on my journeys!

Travels in Maui are never boring.

My buddy Aaron arrived in Maui this week from Minnessota.  Cold weather and no beach there, not like Maui.
Like me, Aaron did not research the island one bit.  I simply told him to come down, so like any young adventurous friend, he quickly jumped on a plane and left -10 degree weather for a tropical paradise for a week.

The week was filled with the excitement of rainbows, waterfalls, friends, volcanoes, snorkeling, epic views, drinks, and car break-ins.  Needless to say, we had fun.

So it started out great, Aaron ventured on his own while I continued demolition of an old soda bottling plant in Wailuku. Swinging a sledge hammer had never been so much fun. At the end of the day, I would come home covered in dirt and grime while my buddy would let me know how awesome his day was.

An Introduction to my life

The sun rises at six and sets at six.  So close to the equator we have 12 hour days of light & darkness.  On this magical island called Maui, we are called to enjoy nature, the land ('aina) and sea (moana).
This is a simple island.  There are no subways, no skyscrapers.  There are no large military bases or monstrous ports of call.

Me?  I live at Harbor Lights.  A community of immigrants from Micronesia, Africa, Tonga, and the mainland.  We are blessed to have many Hawaiian neighbors here as well.  There are four stories of apartments overlooking a central courtyard which will be filled with the energy and laughter of hundreds of children on any given day.  It's not the richest of environments when measuring by materialistic wealth, however I will say it stands on its own when it comes to the humanistic wealth of its people.

I work for AmeriCorps and I am currently stationed on Maui, Hawaii working with Habitat for Humanity.  I am in charge of volunteers & construction.  I coordinate the jobsites from a product and process standpoint.  Basically, I budget for & order supplies, assign & assist volunteers with construction related tasks, and report back to the office.  It is a very physically demanding job, but what is good  for the body is good for the soul.

On Sundays & Mondays I hike.  In the evenings I befriend my fellow human, prepare meals, and canoe.  It is a rewarding time, a time for personal healing.  Life is good on the Island of Maui, where one can focus on oneself and let the troubles of life disappear.
